It did this by mobilizing the community and implementing programmes and activities to strengthen each link of the chains.

Tuberculosis (TB)

Tuberculosis, a sometimes crippling and deadly disease, is on the rise and is revisiting both the developed and developing world. Globally, it is the leading cause of deaths resulting from a single infectious disease. Understanding behavior patterns and social cultural issues is best done to prevent this fatal disease. It also provides valuable background information about issues and problems Aaghaz Foundation arranged time to time different community awareness session and devoting efforts with the core rationale for the following objectives.
  • Knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about Tuberculosis (TB) in Pakistan
  • Health care seeking behavior of TB patients
  • Attitude towards TB and TB Patients
  • Social and cultural barriers in access and compliance to TB treatment
  • Decision making authority at the household level regarding access of treatment
  • Compliance and non-compliance issues
  • Impact of social stigma on health care seeking behavior
  • Suggestions from patients, families, communities and health care providers to increase compliance, decrease stigma and fight TB in Pakistan
Aaghaz Foundation has also taken joint venture with National T.B Control programmes to facilitating the T.B patients under D.O.T methods and also making sure for their smooth access to free T.B Dispensaries in all districts.

HIV Aids

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. This virus causes AIDS. Being infected with HIV, however, is not the same as having AIDS. People who have tested positive for HIV have been known to stay healthy for years, even decades, with proper treatment. Over time – in many cases, a long time — HIV slowly weakens the immune system until AIDS develops.AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome. In medicine, a syndrome is a group of symptoms that all together indicate the presence of a disease. When a person has AIDS, his or her body has been weakened to the point where it is not longer able to effectively fight disease. As a result, many other health problems develop when a person has AIDS. We take a bath after sex so we cannot have AIDS” and “AIDS does not happen if you don’t go near prostitutes”. The prevalent myth that keeping sexual relations with young boys/girls cures one of STIs is also one of the factors for the greater demand for children in these activities. The low national contraceptive prevalence rate (34%) makes the vulnerable children more susceptible to contracting STIs. This apparent sense of security, both among the employers and other caregivers and the children themselves, identifies the need for greater awareness about the modes of transmission and causes of HIV/AIDS, within the context of CSA/E. The children expressed the need for awareness about health-related problems, e.g. what medicine to take for anal tears and pain after a sexual encounter, how to avoid catching chicken pox from their friend etc. They also wished for an outlet for ventilating their feelings through organized activities, such as puppet shows or teen theatre. The children expressed the need for learning some basic education, so that they can count their money and read signposts. In interviews and consultations with employers, policemen, and caretakers of Shrines of the surrounding area, none could identify long working hours, lack of adequate nutrition, and routine slapping or hitting as offences against the child. The only violations of child rights that could be identified by them include extreme sexual harassment, rape and sodomy.
